Ottawa National Forest Boasting impressive waterfalls, wooded hills, several lakes, and an extensive network of multi-use trails, Ottawa National Forest is one of the best places for a day trip or a weekend escape. Covering a territory of almost one million acres, this nature reserve was also established in the early 1930s and is a popular recreational destination year-round. Some of the most popular activities among visitors to Ottawa National Forest include fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and cross-country skiing. A visitor center located near the main entrance of the forest welcomes guests with permanent exhibits on the history of the area, interpretive programs, and other activities for visitors of all ages. Located about 100 miles northwest of Crivitz, this national forest can be reached in less than two hours by car. 3. Governor Thompson State Park Established in 2000 and managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Governor Thompson State Park sits along the shores of the Caldron Falls Reservoir and is a well-known destination among water sports enthusiasts. Located just 15 miles northwest of Crivitz, this place offers plenty of opportunities for camping, picnicking, boating, hiking, and swimming. We've rounded up a few hiking trails near us here in Crivitz, WI, and we think you'll love exploring them. Come with us on an adventure! more Five Favorite Hiking Trails in Driving Distance of Crivitz, WI Flowage and Thunder Mountain Look This moderately difficult trail is in the Governor Thompson State Park and is 2.5 miles long. It's a loop trail that takes most people about 50 minutes to complete, and dogs are allowed on leash. You'll pass through forest and wildflower meadows, see plenty of birds, and can stop to see the amazing view of Big Buck Canyon along the way. Snowshoeing is possible (and popular) here during the winter, but be aware that in summer the ticks can be very bad. Be sure to bring spray and tuck your socks into your shoes. Lake Noquebay Sedge Meadow This is an official state wildlife area on the east side of Lake Noquebay, and it is a very diverse area of forest and fen with gorgeous sedge, alpine grasses and flowers, white cedars, and lots more. Expect to see lots of birds here. There are two parking areas on the east side, furthest from the lake, and there are trails and snowmobiling tracks everywhere. Most of the trails here are quite easy, and it's a peaceful and relaxing place to hang out for a day. Menominee River State Park and Recreation Area This spot is nearly 8,000 acres that straddle Michigan and Wisconsin and features lots of undeveloped land with challenging trails as well as opportunities for canoeing, camping, and other recreation. Try the Pemene Falls hiking trail and the Sand Portage trail near the Piers Gorge Unit, which we describe below. Both of these are well marked and maintained: but there are lots of other trails that are not maintained, and you can find them with a bit of exploration and an adventurous spirit. Pemene Falls Get to this trail from the parking lot off Verheyen Lane, right off County Road Z. This is not a paved trail, and though it's mostly level, it does have some very steep slopes and some rocky bits. You can do a short loop of less than a mile, a longer loop of nearly two miles, or just go up to the falls overlook, which is a half a mile. Sand Portage This trail is open and goes through woods. There are some moderate slopes, but nothing too challenging, and it's kept mowed. Reach it from the parking lot off Highway 141, east of Knuston Rd. There are beautiful views of the falls here.
